Founded in 1918, IFPTE represents more than 75,000 men and women in professional, technical, administrative, and associated occupations. IFPTE has 86 chartered local unions across the United States and Canada. IFPTE is a diverse union representing workers in a variety of fields, including local and federal government, the armed forces, aeronautics and aerospace, and computer industries. IFPTE members are also employed in a wide variety of occupations including accountants, architects, criminologists, drafters/ designers, economists, inspectors, administrative law judges, law clerks, and legal assistants, librarians, nurses, public information officers, engineers, scientists, security officers, and park and wildlife workers.

Among the major employers of IFPTE members are the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Navy, NASA, the Department of Interior, the Library of Congress, the Social Security Administration, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, General Electric, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Siemens Westinghouse, Babcock and Wilcox, and many state and local government units.

IFPTE is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, Canadian Labour Congress, and the Union Network International (UNI).
