Founded in 1954, WGAE represents some 4,000 members who perform writing and other operations for television, film, and radio, network and local news organizations, independent stations in many major cities, and for the other producing and communications entities which are signatory to Guild collective bargaining agreements. WGAE represents writers who live and work east of the Mississippi River, and is affiliated with the Writers Guild of America, West, which represents screenwriters west of the Mississippi. All members, East and West, work under the same contracts, and may work on either coast or in between. WGAE, in conjunction with WGAW, currently administer 36 separate collective bargaining agreements. The major employment categories of WGAE members are entertainment, TV and screenwriting (freelance), as well as staff news. Members working under staff news contracts or collective bargaining agreements, include: Newswriters, News Editors, Desk Assistants, Graphic Artists, Continuity Writers, On- Air Promotion Writers, Researchers, News Production Assistants, Production Assistants, News Assignment Deskpersons, Viewers, and Producers. Besides WGAW, the Guild is also affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
